The dream of setting foot in an IVY League university is a very big dream for many students internationally. Well known for their top-quality education, famous teachers, and a long history that goes back hundreds of years. Getting-in might seem intimidating, even to the point of feeling like you need to win a lottery to get accepted. It is certainly attainable if you take the proper steps and put in considerable effort.

OK, so how do you go about getting into one of these mega-competitive colleges and universities? So let’s unpack the news in plain English.

It’s More Than Just Grades

First things first—no, your grades do not suck, and yes, they are important…a whole heck of a lot! IVY League institutions are looking for evidence that you have challenged yourself academically and achieved at a very high level. This translates to:

• High grades in difficult classes:  Taking the most rigorous courses available to you and getting the best grades possible in them. This might involve enrolling in AP (Advanced Placement) or IB (International Baccalaureate) courses, where offered. It’s more than that; it demonstrates you’re not afraid of a challenge and able to tackle the rigors of challenging coursework.
  
• Strong Test Scores: The majority of IVY League universities are going to consider your SAT or ACT scores. Even if they have been “test-optional” in the past, a good score will set you apart. Study extensively for these standardized exams, take multiple practice tests, and earn scores that place in the 95th percentile or higher.
